Should You Lose Weight Fast? Weight Loss Help Blog
You know you should go on a diet to lose some weight but you never get around to it. Then you have a wedding or party to attend and you need to get on a weight loss program that will help you shed some pounds fast. At these times it’s tempting to choose from those fast weight loss diets while not paying any attention to the dangers that could lie ahead. Unfortunately anything that lets you lose weight too fast is not healthy and can cause health problems down the road.
You might think that restricting your calorie intake is a great weight loss option and it can be, assuming that you are eating well above the recommended amount of 2,000 calories per day. In fact if you’re eating more than that it would probably be wise to cut down! However, if you cut your calories too drastically, for example taking 1,000 calories a day, then your body will go in to what is known as survival mode.
Your body goes into survival mode because it recognizes that it is getting a lot less calories than it needs. Your body will attempt to compensate by using less energy. The weight loss you experience in the initial stages might be dramatic as your body gets rid of excess water but it quickly starts to burn muscle as it is a preferred source of energy. When you start to eat normally again it will take some time for your body to re-program itself to use more energy so in the beginning it will start storing all the “excess” food as fat. This often makes you weigh even more than when you started on your fast weight loss diet.
If you think you need to go on a fast weight loss program consult your physician first and then take a three step approach. This approach to weight loss involves a balanced diet. You might find that you can even eat more that you currently eat just as long as it’s the right food. If you are borderline obese or even heavier then you may want to ask your physician about other weight loss options that are available to you. These generally you want a program that works in a manner that helps suppress your appetite, making quick weight loss a bit easier. The third point for healthy weight loss is to exercise. Your exercise program doesn’t even have to be intense in the beginning but simply taking a walk for 30 minutes a day can be enough to get your heart beating.
Unfortunately you can’t achieve fast weight loss in a healthy way by only doing one of the above. If you do just one by itself then you will steadily lose weight over a period of months, but you can’t do a high impact work out for an hour a day and then pig out on pizza and beer several times a week.
Another factor you need to consider if when starting your weight loss program is how much you can lose each week. This amount varies depending on your starting weight and can vary anywhere from 1-4 pounds. Any more than this can cause long term problems. Another issue is that if your starting weight is high and you lose weight too quickly you could be left with unsightly stretch marks or loose hanging skin which needs to be surgically removed.
